Genga & Sophie of Spoke Woven

We are totally mesmerized by the power of a beautiful dreamcatcher! As a décor element, a dreamcatcher is a statement piece that adds magic and mystery to your space; As a lifestyle tool, a dreamcatcher harnesses the universe's energy as well as your own wishes and gifts. For us at The Gypsy Wagon, we are devoted to the dreamcatchers that the folks at Spoke Woven imagine and create by hand, using fabric & feathers, crystals & shells, braids & weaves. We wanted to know a little more about the inspirations behind these dreamcatchers; Genga from Spoke Woven sheds some lovely light on what goes on behind the scenes, as well as what drives her forward.

Where do you call home?

We both call New York home!

How was Spoke Woven born?

There was a point in my life when I went into a really black hole. An abyss. I had lost my job and just basically had given up on life. My most dear friend, Pamela Love, basically resuscitated my soul by just simply believing in me. She told me to make her the biggest dreamcatcher I could. It was for her very first Fashion Week presentation at Milk Studios. I had no idea how to make one, so I figured it out. With the support of friends, of course, and a lot of work they have grown and continue to morph and change with all the amazing people I get to collaborate with. But it all started from Pam. I can't even tell you. She saved my life and the dreamcatchers are my guardian angels.

How would you describe your design style?

That's difficult to answer because each dreamcatcher is designed with the vision of the client in mind. It's like a mind meld of the person we are designing the dreamcatcher for and how we are interpreting that vision.

Where do you find inspiration?

We find inspiration from our customers and the stories that they are willing to share with us about their lives.

What are you working on right now that you are most excited about?

PS3 Charrette School in the West Village is having their annual Auction for the Arts this year. It's an important benefit because PS3's Art, Music, Science and Cooking classes are all fully funded by the parents at PS3.  We got to create a dreamcatcher with 32 amazing 2nd and 3rd graders for this auction to fund these incredibly important classes.

Describe your perfect day.

Sophie and I make dreamcatchers ever Sunday together. We really look forward to that creative time and it has become a very dear part of both of our lives. We both work day jobs and so we work separately until Sunday. Then we meet, talk, laugh, cry, sing and best of all make dreamcatchers for our amazing clients!!

What song will be your soundtrack for spring?

Sophie is listening to Andrea Tomasi and Brown Bird (she has a much more eclectic and well-rounded music vibe than me) and I am always listening to classic rock (being a 70's child) but I am really re-falling in love with Led Zeppelin and Tom Waits - at the moment.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

Sophie spent most of her middle school years sleeping in a tent outside her house to be close to her cat. And I almost always pee myself when I laugh- although this may not be such a secret.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the Gypsies?

We love you, Gypsy Wagon team!!!
