The Gypsy Wagon Takes Marfa

We thrive off of adventure and inspiration here at The Gypsy Wagon so staying inspired is something we take very seriously. It was time to plan for our Fall 2015 campaign and what better place to shoot than a little historic artsy town, Marfa, Texas. Here you will find some of our favorite locations and the photos to prove it! Enjoy.

Thunderbird Hotel

Thunderbird Hotel was where us gypsies landed each evening. The uniqueness of the hotel kept us inspired while we recharged our brains and conducted outfit changes, while the quiet surroundings allowed us to regroup and focus our goals.  The clean and simple rooms with southwestern influence had us smitten from the very beginning with things like concrete floors, exposed wood, and serape blankets.

Thunderbird Hotel grounds felt like you were walking through the desert with plants like cactus, lavender, agave, sunflowers, and red dirt to complete the desert feel.

We shot the girls around the Thunderbird Hotel grounds as it had all sorts of hidden nooks and crannies craving to be utilized.

We hold serapes very close to our hearts. These blankets were on the beds in every room!

Planet Marfa

Planet Marfa is a bar just down the street from the Thunderbird and it is as cute and eccentric as you would expect from at town like Marfa. This massive working teepee sits in the middle of the bar adding to the quirkiness of the place--as there are tea light candles and string lights hung throughout making it feel as cozy as it is obscure. Planet Marfa has an old school bus that kicks up (or tries to anyway) around dusk every evening to take whoever is willing to see the legendary Marfa Lights at the viewing center down the road. The school bus was hand painted and decorated and projected the Marfa spirit anywhere it sat.

Prada Marfa

Prada is an iconic location just down the road from Marfa in Valentine, Texas. We knew we wanted to shoot here, and we actually ended up shooting our sunrise scenes here as well! The art installation sits in the middle of what seems like nowhere, right across from working railroad tracks. Off in the close distance are mountains and the roads are fairly quiet with few other folks stopping to take their own snapshots of the stand alone designer store.

The Monahans Desert in Texas is pretty special. This was our last stop on our way out of town. Rolling white sand hills as far as the eye can see were the perfect backdrop for our show stopping custom Totem teepee. Our girl Katie was the perfect gypsy princess to play the part as she effortlessly danced and played with her dress in the cool desert breeze. It truly feels like you are in a place far from Texas.

Marfa, Texas is a pretty unique place. With celebrities like Beyonce and Miranda Lambert making Marfa a destination for a quiet getaway, it has been popping up on maps as one of America's must see small towns over recent years. These were some of our favorite spots and we will remember them forever!
